A brief idea about prices --
A sandwich costs 400 kronas (approx 3.5 pounds)
A pint of beer costs 600 kronas (approx. 5 pounds)
A 1ltr juice bottle costs 250 kronas (approx 2 pounds)
A cup of coffee costs 250 Kronas
Well, having lived here for approximately 3 months on student budget I think you can avoid getting ripped-off easily. Here are the tips --
Cheapest food market -- Bonus www.bonus.is (timings are slightly odd though)
Most expensive food market -- 10/11
Cheapest place to buy fish (fiskur in icelandic) -- Flea Market Reykjavik Harbour
Most economical restaurant with great food -- Thai on Vestivagur/Laugvegur
Cheapest stationary and Icelandic clothing -- University Book-shop right next to National Museum on Surorgata
Cheapest Car Rental -- www.geysir.is or budget rental
Cheapest Phone -- www.siminn.is offers best prepaid sim and you can also send free sms in Iceland from their website
Best Currency Conversion -- www.spron.is (Forex in the tourist off charges a lot of commission)
Best place to hangout for Intl student visitors -- International Student House on Hverfisgata (parallel to Laugvegur)
Best place to eat fish -- flugfiskur restaurant where laugvegur meets kringlambraut
Best way to fly to Iceland -- www.icelandexpress.com
Cheapest way to visit westmen islands -- Flight from Bakki airport (drive down to bakki from reykjavik)
